Nation Remit: Remittance finance app redesign
Send money internationally faster, cheaper, and more clearly. Most transfers happen in just a few minutes.
Overview
High Cognitive Load & Form Fatigue: The transaction completion screen relied on generic, tightly packed input fields. Key details like exchange rates, payout options, and fees were buried, forcing users to think too hard before hitting "Send".
Weak Information Hierarchy: The visual layout lacked clear anchor points. Text sizes were uniform, and critical details (like the total amount to pay versus the send amount) didn't stand out effectively.
Feature Stagnation: The original app focused strictly on one-off, linear transfers, missing out on modern retention features that digital-native users expect from financial apps.
Friction in Trust & Compliance: Remittance apps require absolute security and identity verification. The old experience felt sterile and lacked an intuitive, reassuring onboarding and KYC (Know Your Customer) flow.
The Problems
Nation Remit is a digital remittance platform regulated by the FCA that allows users to send money internationally to over 19 countries safely, quickly, and transparently. While the core service boasts competitive rates and fast payouts via mobile wallets, cash pick-ups, and bank transfers, the original mobile application suffered from an outdated, friction-heavy user experience.
As the Lead Product Designer, I completely redesigned the mobile app from the ground up, transforming a cluttered, form-dominant interface into a modern, customer-centric financial ecosystem that drives trust, minimizes transfer friction, and introduces high-value features like automated scheduling and live rate alerts.
The "Old Design" suffered from several UX/UI deficiencies that directly impacted user conversion and trust:
The Solutions
The redesigned app introduces a sleek, card-based interface focused on speed, transparency, and personalization.
1. A streamlined, transparent sending flow
Before & After Triumph: I replaced the single long form with an intuitive, step-by-step "Send Money" interface.
Instant Clarity: The "You send" and "Recipient gets" sections are heavily emphasized with bold typography and prominent flag icons, making currency conversion transparent at a glance.
Interactive Delivery Methods: Users can now select their payout method (Mobile transfer, Bank transfer, Cash collection) via distinct, tactile horizontal tiles right in the flow.
Upfront Pricing: Fees and total costs are cleanly presented right above a prominent, full-width "Continue" CTA, eliminating hidden-fee anxieties.
3. Introducing retention-driven features
To elevate the app from a utility to a daily financial companion, I designed two core feature sets:
Set Schedule: A frictionless calendar and frequency selector (Daily, Weekly, Monthly) allowing users to automate recurring family support transfers.
Set Rate Alert: A simple, high-visibility screen where users can input their target FX rates and opt-in for automated push notifications, ensuring they transfer money at the most cost-effective times.
2. Upgraded dashboard & "Send Again" shortcuts
Home Screen Optimization: Introduced a clean "GBP Balance" card at the top of the feed for instant financial awareness.
One-Click Repeat Transfers: Added a dedicated "My Transactions" list on the home screen equipped with quick "Send Again" buttons next to frequent recipients, drastically reducing the time it takes to complete recurring family transfers.
Floating Navigation: Created an ergonomic bottom navigation bar with a distinct, glowing central "Send" action button for easy thumb access.
4. Reassuring identity verification (KYC)
Visual Guidance: The new document upload screen utilizes clean, friendly illustrations to guide users through scanning their Passport, Driving Licence, or ID card.
Empathetic UX: Added a clear "Why is this needed?" link at the bottom to maintain regulatory transparency, build user confidence, and reduce drop-off rates during the compliance stage.
Key Takeaways & Impact
By introducing visual hierarchy, removing hidden transactional friction, and designing micro-interactions around high-value utilities (scheduling and rate tracking), this redesign seamlessly bridges the gap between secure compliance and a delightful user experience.
